These coins from my world travels were supposed be souvenir. Now, I wish I had just spent the money on an experience.

Scott’s travel budget calculator

A budget isn’t about saving money

I created this online app to help you plan your travels. It’s especially helpful if you are in the brainstorming phase. I share my travel philosophy regarding money. And, the calculator includes all my lessons learned, like my formula for surprises, which saved my butt many times.

If you wanted to save money, then I recommend just staying home. That’s a valid option, and you might be able to retire sooner than planned. However, if you are like me, you’ll want to take a mini-retirement upfront. That being said, it still took me years to realize: The goal is NOT to spend as little as possible. The goal IS to spend intentionally on what matters most to you. While traveling, you are on a restricted budget, because you won’t have an income, but it’s not worth being stingy and missing out on the once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. I regret missing so many things. That’s why I created this calculator — so you won’t miss anything!

I’ve distilled decades of travel experience into a practical tool that helps you calculate what your journey will really cost. Whether you’re planning an epic around-the-world adventure or just a weekend getaway to recharge your spirit, knowing your financial boundaries lets you focus on what matters—the experience itself.

What makes this calculator different

✓ Built by a world traveler who knows the real cost of adventure, including the cost of missed opportunities.

✓ Includes commonly overlooked expenses.

✓ Encourages spending where it matters the most.

✓ Adapts to your travel style.

✓ Accounts for surprises.

✓ Sets a subtotal for each category, a grand total and a daily benchmark budget.

This is a nuts-and-bolts calculator, but if you’d like to brush up on some basics, I recommend these articles:

Okay, let’s put this advice into action with my Travel Budget Calculator below.

Travel budget calculator

Instructions

Simple: Click the info button for some tips. This is just an estimate, so play with the numbers and watch the totals automatically update. For example, the slower you travel, the fewer moves you make, the further your money goes.

Advanced: This calculator has a comprehensive list of categories. I wanted to make sure you didn’t forget anything, but an alternate way of calculating a total is to estimate an average expense and enter that in the “Miscellaneous” category. For example, under “Daily Costs”, if you are traveling through a developing country (Third World), and you would like a comfortable experience, enter about $25 dollars. For a shoestring budget, including wild camping, enter about $10. And if you wanted a luxury experience, you could enter almost any number. If you’ve purchased a guidebook, like Rick Steves, it will give you a range for your budget.

Have fun playing the numbers, and let me know if you have any suggestions.

One-Time Costs

SUBTOTAL: $0.00

Daily Costs (Fun Money)

This category is the reason you are traveling. It contains all the experiences you can't have at home. Museums, historical sites, cultural performances, fine dining – these are the heart and soul of a destination. I recommend you spend big here, especially on the local attractions.

SUBTOTAL: $0.00

Monthly Costs

Leave this section blank if you are traveling for less than one month.

SUBTOTAL: $0.00

Surprises

This is the secret sauce to my travel recipe. I find that no matter how good my estimates are, I'm always off by about 15%. Now, I always allow a little extra. It might go towards a repair or buying a treat. I recommend adding 15% to account for both good and bad surprises.

SUBTOTAL: $0.00

GRAND TOTAL: $0.00

Daily Benchmark: $0.00

The Daily Benchmark is your spending goal per day. It includes your daily total plus surprises. If, at the end of the day, you still have an extra ten dollars in your pocket, have some fun.

Total trips planned using Scott's Travel Planner: 3140

Remember, a travel budget isn’t about restricting your fun – it’s about giving yourself the freedom to enjoy your trip without financial stress looming over your experiences.

Safe travels and happy budgeting!

How much oxygen does a human breathe per day?

We often take breathing for granted, but our bodies process 8,300 liters of air every day to get the oxygen we need to survive. In this article, I show the math and compare this amount to how much a tree produces, and how much a car burns. This is part of my Global Oxygen Depletion series.

The looming crisis of aquatic deoxygenation

Aquatic deoxygenation is accelerating worldwide, prompting scientists to propose it as a new planetary boundary. But the ocean’s 2% oxygen loss reveals an even bigger, overlooked threat: most of that oxygen outgasses into the atmosphere, masking the true rate of atmospheric decline. This article breaks down the science, the math, and why these hidden feedbacks may push Earth closer to an additional tipping point no one is talking about.
