Dave Adam is biking across most of the country in memory of his father and grandfather who died from Alzheimer’s. Update on the journey: While attempting to cycle the Southern Tier from San Diego to St. Augustine, the pre-desert of California hit 122° F and encouraged him to reroute through the heartland.

Editors’ Note: One of the reasons, I travel is for myself, another is to inspire other people. I don’t think I can directly influence anyone, but when it happens it’s very fulfilling. Dave emailed me long before his trip. This is what he had to say; it also shows how a journey can grow and evolve over time. Needless to say, if this journey was forwards or backwards on a bicycle it is worthy of “argonaut” status.
We met in Delafield a few years ago when you signed a copy of your book for me and I count you as an inspiration in getting me to take a cross-country bike ride. I’m planning on going next Sept/Oct and am contemplating doing it as a fundraiser for The Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Research in honor of my father who succumbed to the disease almost two years ago. I was thinking of trying to bike in reverse pedal mode the whole way (so it would be something different and not the same ol’ cross-country trip and so I could say I back-peddled across the US), but am having a hard time getting a reverse/retro pedal bike setup together…and I’m not certain it would work well to cross the continental divide loaded up. Would even a normal bike ride be worthy of an Argonaut designation? If not, no worries. Best wishes, Dave.
