A directional mileage sign on Harbor Island in the Bahamas. These are common signs erected by expats all over the world. (I was lucky to be in the Bahamas just before the pandemic broke out. Since then, it has been an adventure in home making.)

Let's explore how to live a more meaningful life

Welcome. Start here to get a quick overview of my philosophy and how to use this website.

I’m proud to announce a big dream turned into reality — my debut novel, Breathless: The Oxygen Apocalypse. This may be my magnum opus. I put everything I have into this book, including years of research.
I walk you through an exercise to measure and plan your life in weeks. The free, downloadable worksheet will be an unforgettable reminder that life is short and to enjoy it while it lasts.
My girlfriend and I were returning from a three-mile hike to see Delicate Arch, the most photographed landmark in all the national parks. The sun had set, and we had a few more minutes of twilight when a loose bull crests the trail ahead.
Many years later, this question is still one of the most common questions about my journey around the world on a bicycle. Did you break a world record? The short answer is yes and no. In this article, I'll explain the rules for circumnavigating the globe according to Guinness World Records, and, more importantly, how we are all setting our own personal records every day.
Another mis-adventure. I’m more of a misadventurer than an adventurer. Though I may look like a bumbling fool, I love the surprise of leaping before I look. However, often I get much more than I bargained for as I do in this Jamaican adventure.
I went on an archaeological dig uncovering the history of the Hopewell Native American Culture. The dig also dug up some memories of my great-grandmother and old childhood fear that I finally get to lay to rest.

BIG NEWS — A new book!!!

It may seem that I’m slow to make updates, but I am always hard at work behind the scenes. I’m proud to announce one dream turned into reality — my new book, Breathless: The Oxygen Apocalypse.

It’s my debut sci-fi book about a world that runs out of oxygen. This may be my magnum opus. I put everything I have into this book, including years of research.

Upcoming adventures & articles

Here are some dreams slowly becoming a reality. I set dreams out like a carrot in front of a donkey. It keeps me feeling hopeful and motivated. No doubt, I will fail at many, but, in retrospect, I’m proud of some of my “failures” too.

  • New worksheets for adults. I’ve partnered with a friend to turn some of our life wisdom into practical exercises.
  • I moved to California! So, my adventure to kayak the length of the Ohio River got canceled, which seems okay. After the train derailment, I learned that the Ohio River is the most polluted river in the country, which would have made this journey unpleasant.
  • I’m heartbroken to report that I didn’t get the  job as author-in-residence in Antarctica. Maybe next year.

The Hero Series

Are we born with a special purpose?

What does it mean to be a hero? Does the world need to be saved? If so, who will get the job? I know I feel that I was born with a special purpose, and most people I talk to feel the same way. This series is an exploration of whether life is a game of king of the mountain, or if we are all gifted in our own way.

Bicycle Quotes

The oldest and best collection of bicycle quotes on the web

Riding a bicycle is the greatest metaphors for life! Well… at least, we think so. That’s why I started collecting these timeless quotable quotes way back in the early 1990s.

Falling Uphill

Scott's quest for happiness around the world on a bicycle

Scott asked himself, “If I could do anything, what would I do?” His answer turned into a 4-year and 25,752-mile odyssey around the world by bicycle, searching for happiness and the meaning of life. Scott’s journey was one of the first circumnavigations around the planet on a bicycle using only paper maps. Read about the trek around the world on a bicycle.

The original famous bicycle quote. "A bicycle ride around the world begins with a single pedal stroke." By Scott Stoll. Featuring Scott's before and after picture from his trip around the world on a bicycle.

Our new website for kids and their parents, teachers, and caregivers

How to turn dreams into reality: Dream It! Map It! Play It!

I believe everything is an adventure, and all good adventures start with a dream. So I teamed up with like-minded people that wanted to teach kids these valuable life lessons.

In 2018, we published our workbook Dream It! and matching website Dreamaplay.com to teach kids (and adults) how to dream and how to turn those dreams into reality using our easy 3-step formula: 1) Dream it! 2) Map it! 3) Play it! We use traditional pencil-and-paper games and evidence-based activities that teach important concepts, and put them into action right away — because we all know that kids learn by doing — playing!

Dreamaplay.com is full of free resources for kids and their parents, teachers, and healthcare providers. It was over 4 years in the making, and everything was tested in real-world classrooms.

A new children’s book!!!

I’m proud to announce one dream turned into reality — my new book, Feel Your Feelings. During testing, this one has been an instant hit. Feel your feelings introduces children to basic emotions with fun poems that they can act out from head to toe. They will learn that emotions are our friends. Some emotions show us what we love, others protect us from harm, and all of them put together, like colors on an artist’s palette, paint a beautiful picture of life. Learn more. Buy now.
